Merge and split PDFs in Claude

You need one PDF out of several, or three PDFs out of one. And you don't want client documents on a random website. Below is what Claude can and can't do with PDFs, and how the PDF server writes the new file.

Claude can read PDFs, but in most chat apps it can't write a new one. Connect the PDF server and Claude merges, splits, reorders, rotates and stamps PDFs and returns the new file. Run it locally with npx if the files must stay on your machine.

Claude can read the text of a PDF you attach and summarize it. In Claude.ai with code execution and file creation turned on, it can sometimes merge files in its sandbox. In Claude Desktop, Cursor or a plain chat, it can't write a new PDF.

With PDF

The PDF server merges, splits, pulls pages, reorders, rotates, stamps words like PAID, and adds your business footer, each time writing a new PDF and returning the path. With the local install (npx or .mcpb) the files stay in your folders. On the hosted URL the files pass through the server for a short time.

Common mistakes with this job

  • Uploading contracts or ID scans to free online merge sites.
  • Merging in the wrong order and sending a pack that starts with page 3.
  • Rotating a scan in a viewer, which doesn't save the rotation in the file.

Questions

Can I do this in Claude?
Claude can read PDFs, but in most chat apps it can't write a new one. Connect the PDF server and Claude merges, splits, reorders, rotates and stamps PDFs and returns the new file. Run it locally with npx if the files must stay on your machine.
Are my PDFs uploaded?
Not on the local install. It reads and writes files on your machine and makes no network request. The hosted URL is different. You send the file in the request and the server keeps it under your token for a limited time.
Can it read a scanned PDF?
No. There's no OCR. pdf_text tells you when a page is probably a scan.
Can it fill PDF forms?
No. It reads form field values but doesn't fill them.
